I'm Dr. Ami Shah, a fellow Dentist entrepreneur just like you! When I graduated from dental school, I couldn't wait to be independent and be my own boss; implement all the training and make tons of money. I arrived in the dental market with that naivety only to quickly realize that dentistry's real outside practical world was contrary to my popular beliefs! I got hired, fired, or quit from corporates and private practices having unreasonable overtreatment or production goals. A dental practice is meant to be about the patient's well-being, not just about making money! This was the driving force for me to start my practice with my own rules and be my own boss.
However, without proper business knowledge or mentorship, my practice also faced numerous challenges like staffing issues, bargaining patients, low insurance fees, the threat of lawsuits, audits, and heavy competition despite investing in the best equipment and ideal treatment plants! The practice started owning me physically and mentally. Hired consultants, attended seminars, spend tons of time on dental communities as I was hungry for knowledge.
The breaking point came when I had to open several credit cards with a newborn baby to keep the office running and get out of debt. The stress was taking away all the joy of motherhood and owning my business. Determined to succeed, I invested more time and energy in gaining knowledge, putting together all the bits and pieces together from different sources to score a steady climb out of debt! After 11 years of trial and error, studying for the DDS degrees, and a mini-residency in implants want to share what I learned to stop all of you fellow dentists from the same predicament.
